I Misplaced my Honda Prelude car keys, I never have a spare key and need a replacement key. How and where can I get a replacement key. Generally, you have three choices:
- Before anything else, get in touch with a locksmith that works on cars that offers a mobile service for Honda Prelude cars. Our Automotive locksmith department can provide you with that.
- Second, tow the car to the dealer.
- 3rd, purchase a key online and have the dealer or locksmith cut to match your lock and program it to the computer of the car (if important ) for you.
Furthermore, depends upon the style of key you had and year e.g. remote, smart fob, push to start, transponder or regular key you may have a wide range of alternatives about how to get a new key made.
Q: What should I tell the locksmith or dealer when I need service for my Honda Prelude?
First off, make sure you have the exact year, make and model.
In addition, make a note of the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) of the car positioned on the left side of the dashboard near the mirror. (Click here for more information) That would help the locksmith or dealer verifying the year, make and model of the car and the type of key you had.
In addition, ask if you can come and purchase the key or the car needs to be presents. With aging models, codes may not be offered and consequently on-site service will be needed to make a new key.
Otherwise, you can tow the car to the locksmith shop but that would be more very expensive.
Lastly, ensure you can show ownership of the car by having the necessary documents. The title, ID, insurance card etc
Q: Honda Prelude key replacement cost– How much money does it cost to replace Honda Prelude key without the original? What is the normal price?
A: In brief, to replace a Honda Key Locksmith Prelude key usually cost between $90–$ 400. It depends on a few factors:
- Kind of key
- The year manufactured
- Time of day & your location
- Where you get a key replacement (Dealer, automotive locksmith, online etc).
- Availability of code to cut a new key.
- Original ignition or not.
The style of key you had and the year the car was manufactured are maybe probably the most important Preludes.(chip, intelligent fob, “push to start”, remote, regular “non-transponder” key). The newer the automobile is, the better security features the key had and therefore you can expect to pay more than $250 for key replacement.
In addition, it depends where you get a key replacement. The dealer, automotive locksmith or get it online. Click here to get a more detailed explanation.
The dealer typically charges about 10%-15% less than a locksmith would for the key. However, most chances you will have to pull the car there to program the new key or remote and because of this the overall cost is usually higher.
Furthermore, consider that if you are wanting to have a locksmith to come out and make you a new key outside regular business hours, the price may go up.
Finally, just in case your ignition cylinder was changed before (usually with older cars), that most likely means that the code for the key may not work and the key will need to be either cut physically by a locksmith or to change the ignition again which in this case the dealer can’t be of help.
Q: Can I obtain Honda Prelude key replacement by VIN?
A: That depends upon the year of your car and kind of key you had.
A: The VIN permits the dealer or an auto locksmith the solution to access the key code on file, i.e.
To cut you a replacement key by code which makes the process very quick and east. There are however two details to think about:
- For cars older than 10 years: There are no codes available. Consequently, an auto locksmith is your only alternative to get a replacement key.
- For vehicles equipped with transponder device and/or remote/ smart key/ fob key: Codes are readily available. However, programming is necessary and therefore you will have to either tow the car to the dealer or have an auto locksmith come and program the key on site.
Q: What is a transponder chip key? Why is it important to know if I had a chip key?
A: A transponder key is a key that has a security chip in it and because of this will have to be programmed to start off the motor vehicle.
A large number of makes and models, from the year 2000 are equipped with an electronic chip key for added protection. The chip is generally found inside the cover at the top of the key and therefore lot of times you will not be able to check it out.
However, if you attempt to start the auto, you will not be able to except if the key was programmed before.
This is a security component that reduces the chances of theft by simply duplicating the key. Hence, an automotive locksmith or the dealer would needto program the key for it to start the car.
In addition, keys that are ordered online will have to be programmed to the car’s computer and for most keys, only a locksmith for cars or the dealer can do that.
