Matter vs Z-Wave Locks Overview
Matter is an IP-based open standard ratified by the Connectivity Standards Alliance in 2022 and updated regularly since. It runs over Wi-Fi or Thread (a low-power mesh protocol), which means a Matter lock communicates using the same networking layer as a smartphone or laptop. Because the standard is royalty-free and backed by Apple, Google, Amazon, and Samsung, device manufacturers have adopted it quickly. A Matter lock pairs directly with any certified hub or app without a proprietary bridge, as long as the controller also supports Matter.
Z-Wave is a sub-gigahertz mesh radio protocol operating at 908.42 MHz in North America (868.42 MHz in Europe). It has been purpose-built for home automation since 2001 and is owned by Silicon Labs. A household with no existing hub that simply wants to add one smart lock will likely find Matter less friction-prone to set up.

Interoperability and ecosystem lock-in. Matter is specifically designed to eliminate ecosystem silos. A single Matter lock can be added to an Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa account simultaneously, and all three will reflect state changes in real time. Z-Wave devices work only within Z-Wave ecosystems; switching hub brands may require re-pairing every device. That is a meaningful consideration for renters, property managers, or anyone who anticipates changing platforms.
Range and RF performance. Z-Wave’s sub-gigahertz signal travels farther per hop than 2.4 GHz Thread or Wi-Fi and passes through concrete and brick with less attenuation. Security architecture. Z-Wave S2 (Security 2) uses AES-128 encryption with a ECDH key exchange during pairing, making brute-force radio interception highly impractical. Matter uses AES-128 and CASE (Certificate Authenticated Session Establishment) for device commissioning, with a QR-code or numeric passcode as the initial trust anchor. Both frameworks are cryptographically sound when devices are paired correctly. The risk arises during installation: an improperly paired Z-Wave lock may fall back to unencrypted S0 or no security at all, a silent failure that most users never detect. Matter’s commissioning process is more explicit about security level, though it can fail if the QR code is damaged or the commissioner app has a bug.
Firmware and long-term support. Z-Wave has a 20-year track record; hubs from major brands still support locks certified under older Z-Wave generations. Matter is newer, and while backward compatibility is a stated goal of the CSA, it is worth verifying that a specific lock model receives firmware updates and that the standard version it implements matches the hub’s supported version. Locks running Matter 1.0 may lack features introduced in later specification releases.
Costs and Risks
Smart lock hardware spans a wide price range regardless of protocol. Z-Wave locks from established brands typically fall in the $100–$300 range for the lock itself. Schedule a post-installation verification. After the lock is installed and commissioned, test remote locking and unlocking from outside the home with the door closed and bolted. Verify that automations trigger correctly — auto-lock after a set interval, alerts on unlock, and low-battery notifications. Confirm that the override key operates smoothly.
