Bolt Work refers to the internal bolt-and-linkage hardware that moves the locking bolt(s) when a key, thumbturn, or lever is operated. In practical service terms, Bolt Work is where many “locks feel stiff” complaints actually originate, because Bolt Work interacts with alignment, spring force, and the strike opening.
Bolt Work is also one of the clearest dividing lines between a lock that only needs minor adjustment and a lock that needs parts replacement. When Bolt Work is worn, bent, obstructed, or mis-timed, Bolt Work can prevent full extension, cause partial retraction, or create binding that looks like a key problem even when the key is correct. A Bolt Work inspection focuses on movement, timing, and full travel of Bolt Work under normal operating force.

What Is a Bolt Work
Plain Language Definition
Bolt Work is the moving mechanism that converts user input into bolt motion. In many locksets, Bolt Work includes a bolt, a retraction hub or cam, return springs, and guides that keep the bolt traveling straight. Bolt Work is separate from the keying elements that decide whether the lock is allowed to turn; once rotation is permitted, Bolt Work is what actually extends and retracts the bolt.
In a latch-type product, Bolt Work typically retracts a spring latch. In a deadbolt-type product, Bolt Work typically drives a solid bolt that must travel farther and seat more positively. In multi-point hardware, Bolt Work can coordinate more than one bolt position, but the service idea stays the same: Bolt Work is the motion and timing package, and Bolt Work performance determines whether the bolt reaches full lock.
Where It Is Used
Bolt Work appears in residential locksets, commercial-grade hardware, and certain cabinet and utility locks. Bolt Work can be simple, with a single bolt and spring, or complex, with multiple linkages that must stay synchronized. Wherever a lock has a moving bolt, there is some form of Bolt Work, and Bolt Work condition affects how the door or gate closes and secures.
Bolt Work also shows up in retrofit situations, where a new lock is installed into an existing door preparation. In those cases, Bolt Work may be mechanically healthy but functionally compromised because Bolt Work is asked to operate against a misaligned strike opening. Bolt Work tolerates only limited misalignment before binding or incomplete extension occurs.
