  • C-Rate — Similar informal designation indicating 1/2-inch body steel and 1-inch door steel. Also unverified by independent testing.
  • TL-15 — A formal UL certification (Tool-Resistant, 15 net working minutes) confirming the safe resisted a 15-minute attack by common hand and electric tools against the door face. This is a widely referenced baseline for commercial burglary rated safes.
  • TL-30 — The same test protocol extended to 30 net working minutes. TL-30 burglary safes are the most common specification requirement in commercial insurance policies for cash-in-safe coverage.
  • TL-30×6 — A 30-minute attack test applied to all six sides of the safe, not only the door. Required for situations where the safe could be moved, tipped, or attacked from the rear or sides.
  • TRTL-30×6 — Torch and Tool Resistant, 30 minutes, six sides. This rating adds oxyacetylene torch resistance to the standard tool attack, addressing cutting attacks on the steel body and door.
  • TXTL-60 — The most demanding UL burglary safe rating for commercial products, covering torch, tool, and explosive resistance over 60 net working minutes on all six sides. These units are rare outside of high-value retail, financial institutions, and jewelry stores.

Within each TL tier, UL also certifies the locking mechanism separately. A Group 2 dial lock meets a basic manipulation-resistance standard; a Group 1 or Group 1R lock meets higher manipulation and radiological resistance standards and is typically required on TL-30 and above burglary safes. Electronic locks installed on burglary rated safes must carry a UL Type 1 or Type 2 listing to maintain the safe’s certification integrity.

Where It Is Used

Burglary safes appear across a wide range of settings, and the appropriate rating tier varies significantly by context.
