Passage Lock is a common interior-hardware function that allows a door to latch closed while remaining unlocked from both sides. A Passage Lock is selected when free passage is the priority and there is no intent to restrict access with a key or thumbturn. In building hardware terms, the Passage Lock function is a “non-locking” configuration, even though the latch still keeps the door shut.
In practical use, a Passage Lock supports circulation between rooms, reduces user confusion, and avoids lockouts created by accidental locking. A Passage Lock may be installed as a knobset, lever set, or other interior latchset style, and it is usually paired with standard strike hardware and hinges rather than a dedicated keyed security package.

A Passage Lock is a latch assembly that has operating trim on both sides and no locking button, keyed plug, or privacy thumbturn. When a Passage Lock is in the closed position, the latch bolt engages the strike to hold the door in place, and either handle retracts the latch. A Passage Lock therefore controls closure, not access control.
In a typical Passage Lock, the outside and inside handles are always “active.” Because a Passage Lock is designed to remain unlocked, it is not a substitute for a keyed entry function or a privacy function used in bathrooms or bedrooms. The Passage Lock is best understood as a passage function latch: it maintains a closed door while keeping movement unrestricted.
Where It Is Used
A Passage Lock is commonly used on interior room-to-room openings such as hall closets that do not need restricted access, interior corridors, pantries where locking is undesirable, and general-purpose rooms in residential or light commercial settings. A Passage Lock is also used where safety or egress simplicity is more important than security, because the Passage Lock does not introduce a lock state that can trap occupants behind a locked interior door.
Where keyed security is required, the Passage Lock is generally not appropriate. Where privacy is required, a Passage Lock is usually replaced with a privacy function lockset. Where a door should not latch at all, the Passage Lock concept is replaced by a passage latch without a latch bolt, or by other hardware configurations that do not rely on a latching action.
Passage Lock security profile and design
The security profile of a Passage Lock is intentionally low because the Passage Lock is not a locking device. The primary job of a Passage Lock is to keep a door closed and to provide a consistent feel at the handle. For that reason, a Passage Lock is evaluated more on durability, latch alignment, and user ergonomics than on forced-entry performance.
Most Passage Lock products use a spring latch bolt that extends into a strike plate. In a Passage Lock installation, correct backset, latch face alignment, and strike placement matter more than “security rating,” because poor alignment can cause the Passage Lock to feel sticky, fail to latch reliably, or require extra force to operate.
A Passage Lock is often specified with a lever for accessibility reasons. Lever-operated Passage Lock trim generally provides easier operation than round knobs, especially for users with limited grip strength. In facilities work, a Passage Lock is frequently chosen to keep interior openings consistent while still allowing separate keyed functions on perimeter openings.
Because a Passage Lock does not control access, it should not be used as the primary security measure for rooms containing valuable property. If a Passage Lock is installed on a door that should be secured, the correct remedy is typically to change the function (for example, to keyed entry) rather than attempting to “upgrade” the Passage Lock alone.
Security and Service Considerations
Frequent service problems
Many service calls attributed to a Passage Lock are actually alignment issues at the latch and strike. A Passage Lock can fail to latch when the door is sagging, hinges are loose, or the strike is mispositioned. In that case, the Passage Lock may appear to “not work,” even though the latch and trim are functional.
Another frequent issue is handle looseness or trim wobble. A Passage Lock typically relies on through-bolts or mounting screws that can back out over time. When the trim loosens, a Passage Lock can bind, feel rough, or stop retracting the latch fully. Tightening the mounting hardware and confirming correct spindle engagement is a common corrective step for a Passage Lock.
Latch wear is also a factor. In high-use doors, a Passage Lock latch spring can weaken or the latch bolt can develop burrs, which changes how the latch slides against the strike. A Passage Lock with excessive wear may require latch replacement or full hardware replacement, depending on parts availability and the specific design.
Environmental factors can matter as well. Paint buildup around the latch edge or strike opening can interfere with a Passage Lock. Seasonal movement of the building can shift clearances. For a Passage Lock, small changes in clearance can be noticeable because the function depends on free latch movement rather than on a positive lock engagement.

A Passage Lock can sometimes be converted to a different function by replacing the interior and exterior trim and, in some product lines, the latch module.
