Honda Accord key types & programming facts

From 2000–2012, North American Honda Accords use immobilizer transponder keys, so cutting the key blade alone is not enough; the chip in the key must be programmed to the vehicle’s immobilizer system. Keyless-entry remotes (or the remote portion of a remote-head key) can be added or re-added using an onboard programming sequence that cycles the ignition and door locks, with a maximum of three remotes stored at one time. Some later-Accord key and remote programming may require professional diagnostic equipment even though separate remote programming instructions exist for the 2000–2012 generation.

Key types used on the Accord:

  • transponder chip key (separate metal key, optional separate keyless-entry remote) (2000-2002)
  • remote-head key (integrated key + remote buttons) with transponder (approximately 2003-2012 (on-board remote programming procedure documented for 2000-2012 Accord, while later years also use remote-head keys))

Common fob FCC IDs: KOBUTAH2T — check the back of your fob; we confirm the exact variant on site.

Route verified — exact steps vary by trim/equipment

Route verified as onboard programming (no dealer needed). The sequences below are general route guidance — use them only if your vehicle shows the same prompts and controls. If the prompts don’t match, stop and call us.

Show the programming methods (19 steps)

Initial Steps to Enter Programming Mode

Turn ignition to ON
1 Turn ignition switch to ON (II)
Press LOCK + UNLOCK
2 Press LOCK or UNLOCK button on one remote (unprogrammed remote acceptable)
Turn ignition to ON
3 Turn ignition switch to LOCK (0)
Press / hold a fob button
4 Repeat ON → press remote → LOCK sequence two more times using same remote
Turn ignition to ON
5 Turn ignition switch to ON (II) after three repetitions

Confirming Entry into Programming Mode

Press LOCK + UNLOCK
1 Press LOCK or UNLOCK button on the same remote after turning ignition ON
Cycle the ignition ON/OFF
2 Verify power door locks cycle to confirm programming mode entry
Cycle the ignition ON/OFF
3 Power door locks cycle indicates system ready to accept remotes
Cycle the ignition ON/OFF
4 If locks do not cycle, programming mode was not entered successfully
Wait / timing window
5 Timing requirement: each step within 5 seconds to prevent exit from programming mode

Programming Additional Remotes

Press LOCK + UNLOCK
1 Press LOCK or UNLOCK button on each remote to program
Cycle the ignition ON/OFF
2 Verify door locks cycle after pressing each remote to confirm acceptance
Programming step
3 Repeat for every remote that needs programming
Programming step
4 Previously programmed remotes must be included in this step to remain functional
Cycle the ignition ON/OFF
5 Continue until all desired remotes have produced a lock-cycle confirmation

Finishing and Testing

Turn ignition to ON
1 Turn ignition switch to LOCK (0) to exit programming mode
Programming step
2 Test each programmed remote after exiting programming mode
Programming step
3 Replace key fob battery if remote not working before reprogramming

How we validate this guide

Year coverage comes from our consolidated vehicle programming dataset. Route-level programming status is reviewed against internal route sheets and available manufacturer, security-access, and professional tool references. Exact button sequences are marked source-verified only when we have year/equipment-specific support; where a year is labeled “route verified, steps vary,” we confirm the exact fob, trim, and prompts before programming. Reviewed for route and safety by Mohammad H. Abdelhadi, ALOA-Certified Master Locksmith.

Common questions

Does my 2000–2012 Honda Accord key have a chip in it?

Yes. Accords in this range use immobilizer transponder keys, so the key must be both cut and electronically programmed to start the engine.

Can I program a replacement remote for my Honda Accord myself?

For 2000–2012 models, there is an onboard procedure to program keyless-entry remotes, and up to three remotes can be stored.

If I program a new remote, will my old remotes still work?

Entering remote programming mode cancels all previously stored remotes; all remotes must be programmed during the same session for them to continue working.

Can you program a Accord key fob without going to the dealership?

For most years, yes - the route is onboard relearn or an OBD tool, both of which a mobile locksmith handles at your location.

Does this program the remote only, or the transponder key too?

It depends on your key type. Tell us your FCC ID and we will confirm.

What if my year says professional programming required?

Those years need a programmer or security access; we bring the tool to you and program it on site.

How much does it cost?

It depends on year, key type, and whether you have a working key. Call (833) 439-8636 for a firm price before we dispatch.
